Marxism is the belief that human consciousness is a product of one’s economic conditions, social class, and that relationships with others are often determined by those factors. It also implies that the weak or less-fortunate are always exploited and taken advantage of by the richer and more powerful and people should work toward a society in which there are no classes and everyone is equal. (Merriam) Feminism is organized activity on behalf of womens rights and interests, believing that there should be equal rights for all women regardless of race, creed, economic conditions, educational status, physical appearance, or ability. (Merriam) In the play â€Å"A Doll House† by Henrik Ibsen, it has been debated for many years which of these†¦show more content†¦These are just a few of the many examples of Hendrik Ibsen’s use of symbolism in his play â€Å"A Doll House† and its relation to money. Throughout the entire play, Ibsen uses his characters to reflect a Marxist attitude and show how ones’ financial situation determines a person’s actions in life and towards others. In the play, Torvald is a Commercial Bank Manager and bases his outlook on life and relationships solely on money and the status his job and income earn him. Krogstad, who was a lawyer, also works at the same bank as Torvald; he committed fraud years before to help his financial situation and luckily was not imprisoned for his crime. In ACT II, Torvald blackmails Nora for her forgery of a loan document to help his own financial status by using her to gain job security at the bank through her husband. Dr. Rank is just that, a doctor, he seems to have money along with status simply from his profession. Even Nora, the main character of the play, has Marxist ideals attached to her persona. Ibsen explains early in the play that Nora and Torvald were not very well off when they first married, and struggled to get by. Now that Nora belongs to a higher social class, she has become extremely frivolous with money.
